D.O.U.B.T._Belfast, 2023
The "D.O.U.B.T. Club" was a participatory project that emerged from a four-month stay in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 2023. Research in the Shankill and Falls Road areas, the epicenter of most violent incidents during the Troubles—a civil war-like conflict between two population groups in Northern Ireland (1968-1998)—revealed that the conflict not only persists in various forms but also presents new challenges, such as the radicalization of young people and the intergenerational glorification and romanticization of violence.
In an environment marked by entrenched positions and a strong belief in one's own history and its representation, Kraus created the "D.O.U.B.T. Club" to understand the roots of conflicts, the patterns that sustain them, and to creatively transform them. By using familiar visual forms of flags and ideologically driven associations, these elements were reinterpreted, giving 16-year-old youth the opportunity to transform them. By establishing their own clubs, young participants not only created their own spaces but also contributed their thoughts and visions to the visual landscape in the form of flags. This served to diversify the urban space and, at the same time, strengthen resistance to recruitment by gangs.
